Young Earth vs. Old Earth

This is a topic somewhat related to creation vs. evolution and is hotly debated by many but in reality, is not all that important in the long run. A person can believe one or the other and still be saved, still love the Lord, and still have rewards in heaven.

The real question is the debate over what happened between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2, the first two verses of the Bible.

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
Genesis 1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

The old earth theory is that God created the heaven and earth in the very beginning but then something catastrophic happened and God started recreating it in verse 2. Millions or Billions of years could have passed between verse one and verse two.

The best argument for an old earth is that we can see an uncountable number of stars and can measure how far away they are by stellar parallax. The farthest individual star that has been observed with a telescope has been figured to be about 5 billion light years away. That means it took the light that we see today 5 billion years to get here which means that it had to have been created at least that long ago.

The counter argument is that God can do anything he wants including creating the stars with the light already in transit and so could have done that just six thousand years ago.

Since the Bible doesn't specifically tell us what happened between those two verses, the answer is up to the individual's own choice of what to believe. What IS CERTAIN is that it has been approximately 6000 years ago that Adam and Eve were created because the Bible gives the genealogy of those from Adam to Christ and the age of most is given when they produced the next offspring in the genealogy. We have actual historical records from Christ until now so that pretty much sets the time of Adam within a few years.

One VERY important subject related to this argument IS related to evolution. Since the flood is detailed in the Bible, it is fixed in time in that 6000 years since Adam and it changed the earth at that time. The flood did not happen millions of years ago and the consequences of it did not happen over millions of years but very quickly. The flood deposited what are found today to be fossils which do not go back millions of years.  Much more needs to be explained about this and is coming but to get this website published now, this subject will have to wait.

More to come.
